B-Side Studios LLC casting "The Realness," a play written by Idris Goodwin. Synopsis: 1996 is an incredible time to be a hip-hop fan, so the moment T. O. escapes the suburbs, he plunges into the scene, eager to experience the culture for himself. It doesn't get much more real than Prima, a super-dope MC supporting her family, and the moment he meets her, T. O. falls madly in love. But when he becomes tangled in the lies he tells to get closer to her, he's forced to ask himself: is he after real love, or fulfilling a middle-class fantasy of rap? Idris Goodwin takes on tough questions of authenticity and class collision with humor, heart, and killer rhymes in a coming-of-age tale set to the beat of hip-hop history.

Production states: "Since 1999, B-Side Studios has been part of bringing an annual Black Excellence production to the Village of Schaumburg and we're excited to continue this 20+ year tradition. Our next production is titled 'And Then There Was Hip Hop.' This production will be a celebration of 2023 being the 50th year of the cultural juggernaut known as Hip Hop. Within this celebration, the focal point will be the theatrical presentation of 'The Realness' (written by Idris Goodwin, directed by Maurice D. Proffit)."

    Expires: December 15, 2022

We're casting the lead role of Ella Sheppard (Black, 20) for our theatrical feature Steal Away, and are working to get the word out to as many Black actresses as possible. Breakdowns for Steal Away are out on Backstage as well as other breakdown services, but we very much also want the casting call to reach the many extraordinary young artists working predominantly in theatre.

Ella Sheppard is a powerful role with a very strong dramatic arc for a young actress. In the Rev. Jesse Jackson's "enthusiastic" endorsement of Steal Away, he writes, "Though perhaps unfamiliar to some, Ella Sheppard was one of the greatest heroes the cause of Freedom has ever known. Her staggering courage and sacrifice saved countless Black schools from supremacist destruction, and her breathtaking story will captivate and inspire the world." We're casting several other roles as well.

Steal Away is based on Andrew Ward's post-Civil War musical epic "Dark Midnight When I Rise." A three-minute story video and other information can be found at RealmPictures.co/steal-away-movie
